Water Damage FYI – Categories of Water

6/14/2021 (Permalink)

Drying equipment in a commercial office building When water damage strikes, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for help!

Water damages to your property can arise from a variety of sources, including external flooding, broken pipes, or backed up sewage lines.  The source of the water intrusion plays a role in defining the “category of water” that is to be remediated.  Different processes are followed depending on the category of the water involved; each with their own unique characteristics.  Knowing the kind, or category, of water that has infiltrated your property is important in the restoration process.

Category 1, or “Clean Water” is water from a clean source, such as a broke supply line or faucet.  If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 depending on the factors such as length of time left sitting, temperature of the structure, and contact with contaminants.

Category 2, or “Gray Water” has a high level of contamination that could cause illness or discomfort if ingested.  Sources of category 2 water may include washing machine overflow, dishwasher overflow, or toilet overflow that does NOT contain feces.

Category 3, or “Black Water” is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness if ingested, and physical contact should be avoided.  Sources of category 3 water may include floodwaters, which often contain biological contaminants, toilet overflow that does contain feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Having a trusted cleanup and restoration professional to call in case of a water damage emergency is paramount to making your loss “Like it never even happened.”  SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has the training, equipment, and experience to take care of water damages of all sizes.  To learn more, or request service, give us a call at 229-439-2048, We’re Here to Help!

Hurricane Season is Here! Are You Prepared?

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Satellite image of Hurricane Michael in 2018 Are You Storm Ready? Hurricane Season is Here!

Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1st, and as many residents of the Southeastern United States know, it is imperative to be prepared in the event a hurricane heads their way.  Although not directly on the coast, our area has the possibility of experiencing hurricane conditions, which can lead to wind damage, flooding rains, or tornadoes, and because of this, having an emergency kit prepared is extremely important this time of year.

So, what should go into your Hurricane Preparedness Kit?  Ready.gov offers the following list as a guide:

  • Water – one gallon per person, per day, for several days.
  • Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery Powered or Hand Crank Radio
  • Flashlight
  • First Aid Kit
  • Batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust Mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic Sheeting & Duct Tape
  • Moist Towelettes
  • Garbage Bags
  • Wrench or Pliers
  • Manual Can Opener
  • Prescription Medications
  • Non-Prescription Medications (such as pain relievers and fever reducers)
  • Cash
  • Paper & Pencil
  • Matches or Lighter
  • Personal Hygiene Items

Also, if you have children or pets, be sure to prepare specific supplies for their needs, such as books and activities for children, or food bowl, water bowl, food, and leash for a pet.  Although preparation can be extensive, it is always better to find yourself having too much instead of too little in the case of a natural disaster emergency.

Folks who have lived on the east coast for any length of time are fully aware that some of those areas are tornado prone and that Mother Nature provides an opportunity for damage to be done. You should also know, or be aware, that it's not just a tornado with high winds that can cause havoc. Things as simple as a broken or damaged concrete slab can produce water in home, as well as water in business. Water Damage may not reach the status of a 100 mile per hour tornado, but the flood damage can be annoying and costly. Actually, in a recent survey, it was found that water slab leaks are quite common in Georgia and hard to detect.

Mitigation And Water Damage Restoration

There is not a whole lot worse that could happen to a person than standing knee deep in smelly water in your home with thoughts of drying, water cleanup and air movement running through your mind. Well, maybe you were not prepared for this water damage and flood damage episode, but to prevent future problems of water in home or water in business - think: water damage restoration and mitigation. You should also understand that mitigation should be handled by an experienced and licensed professional water restoration contractor, not your neighbor or your cousin Bob. That said, if you are a homeowner or business owner with a water damage or flood damage conundrum, let's do a question and answer primer.

#1 - What are the effects of water damage, flood damage, water in home or water in business as well as water cleanup? If water makes a direct hit, it will cause drywall to sag, and fall apart. If wood is involved, it will swell and buckle, then rot.

#2 - Can water in home or water in business be prevented? There is not much you can do to an act of nature. But strangely enough, most significant water damage or flooding damage is caused by indoor plumbing failures like a leaky underground pipe.

#3 - How long does it take for the drying process or complete water cleanup? Mostly, drying and water cleanup will depend largely on the extent of damage, saturation and how long the water in home or water in business has been exposed to water.

Restoration, Air Movement, And Mitigation!

Using a certified restoration company to handle the drying, air movement, water cleanup and overall water restoration is best left for the professionals. They know why the air movement feels dry and usually have been in the water damage restoration business a long time.
Note: If you are wondering why a water damage restoration company would need to have access to your water in home or water in business once the water has been extracted and the drying process has begun, the professional contractor will need to continue monitor and control the moisture, humidity levels along with the air movement until everything in the environment is returned to normal and no mold threatens.

A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives; but portable extinguishers have limitations. Because fire grows and spreads so rapidly, the #1 priority for residents is to get out safely. Here is what you need to know about choosing and using fire extinguishers!

It is highly recommended that every home have at least one fire extinguisher. Preferably one fire extinguisher on each floor of a dwelling but particularly in high fire hazard areas like the kitchen. It is equally important to know how to use your fire extinguisher in case of a fire.

The acronym PASS is often used to help one remember how to use a fire extinguisher.

Pull the pin. While holding the nozzle away from you, and release the locking mechanism.

Aim low, pointing the nozzle at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly down.

Sweep the nozzle from side to side to extinguish the fire.

We hope these fire safety tips are helpful but if you ever suffer from a fire damage WE ARE HERE TO HELP at SERVPRO of Albany & Americus!

With warmer temperatures rolling in, and longer sunny days ahead, many people are enjoying more time participating in outdoor activities.  Although many common causes of residential fires are related to the cooler fall and winter months, there are still some considerations to make during the summertime when it comes to practicing fire safety:

  • Practice Outdoor Grilling Safety! Grilling is a very common activity during the summer, and it is important to take proper precautions when operating your grill.  Be sure to leave plenty of space between you grill and any structures, foliage, or flammable materials. The U.S Fire Administration recommends keeping a 3-foot safe zone around your grill, providing safety for your property, pets, and children.
  • Fire Safety & Camping Trips: Bonfires are a very enjoyable activity during camping trips. It is important to build your bonfire a safe distance away from tents, shrubs, and other materials that can burn.  Never leave your bonfire unattended, extinguish after use, and make sure all coals are out before leaving the area.
  • Enjoying Fireworks: Fireworks can go from fun to dangerous very quickly.  Do not use in heavily populated areas or around dense foliage.  Do not allow children to use fireworks unattended, and always have a method of extinguishing fireworks available.

In the unfortunate event that your summertime activities lead to fire damage to your home, know that SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help.  Our team of professionals is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and take great pride in providing the highest caliber of customer service.  To learn more about our service lines, give us a call at 229-439-2048.

Don’t Let Mold Take Hold in Your Albany Area Business!

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

Man in PPE performing mold remediation in Albany, Georgia We have the training, equipment, and experience to take on mold remediation jobs of all sizes!

In the humid Southwest Georgia climate, a minimal amount of moisture mixed with the right material, such as drywall, creates the PERFECT environment for an unwanted invader – MOLD!  In order to keep yourself, your employees, and your customers safe, the last thing you want to encounter in your commercial property is mold, as mold can cause adverse health effects.   Following are a couple of tips for preventing mold growth at your commercial property:

#1 – Monitor for, and repair, any leaks:

With intricate plumbing systems, and multiple points of entry and exit, commercial buildings are much more likely to incur leaks, whether from internal sources, such as sink fixtures, or external, like severe weather.  Create a plan for monitoring for water leaks, and if found, repair as soon as possible to limit the amount of moisture absorbed into the building.  Common signs of leaks to watch for include pooling of water in one specific location, staining on ceiling tiles or drywall, and a musty odor in a particular area.

#2 – Take care of your HVAC system:

Circulating unclean air in conjunction with humidity and moisture can lead to mold growth.  Change out AC filters regularly and keep duct work maintained to limit the possibility of microbial growth.  Condensation can often form at air duct vents and returns, so be cognizant of this moisture and keep it from seeping into surrounding materials.

In the unfortunate event that mold does take hold in your Albany area business, know that SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help!  We have the equipment, experience, and training to provide mold remediation services while limiting business interruption as much as possible.  To learn more about our process, please give us a call at 229-439-2048.

Categories of Water Damage

Drying Mat in Use on Residential Flooring in Leesburg, GA SERVPRO of Albany and Americus has the equipment, experience, and expertise to handle water damages of all categories, and all sizes!

When it comes to mitigating water damages, one of the most important steps that the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus take is to identify the category, or type, of water that has caused the damage.  This categorization helps to define the procedure that will be followed for the mitigation and restoration process, the equipment needed, and the various techniques that may be utilized throughout the course of the job.  There are three categories of water that we consider in this process:

  • Category 1, or “Clean Water” is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
  • Category 2, or “Gray Water” has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
  • Category 3, or “Black Water” is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth. Handling damages caused by category 3 water requires the use of PPE, or Personal Protective Equipment, to perform the mitigation safely.

In order to limit the amount of damage sustained by your home or business after a water loss, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus offer 24 hour a day, 7 day a week emergency response.  Serving communities throughout Southwest Georgia, our team of IICRC trained professionals has the equipment, expertise, and experience to handle damages of all sizes, and We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Reducing the Risk of Dryer Fires

4/14/2021 (Permalink)

Burned clothes dryer with SERVPRO logo In the unfortunate event that a dryer fire causes damages to your Southwest Georgia home, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for help!

Dryer fires are a leading cause of residential fire damage in the United States.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 16,000 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year. These dryer fires cause around 13 deaths, 440 injuries, and $238 million in property loss. Following are a few ways to help prevent the risk of a dryer fire in your home, protecting yourself, your family, and your property:

  • Clean the dryer vent running from the machine to the outside of your home out regularly: The leading cause of dryer fires, at 34%, is the failure to clean dryer vents, trapping heat and flammable lint material within the line.
  • Clean the dryer lint filter inside of the machine after each load of laundry is dried. An abundance of lint in the filter restricts the flow of air to the machine.
  • Occasionally check for and, if needed, repair damages to the vent pipes behind the machine.
  • Make sure your machine is installed using the correct type of electrical plug and outlet per the manufacturer’s instructions.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is a trusted leader in the fire clean up and restoration industry, and our highly trained team is Here to Help in the unfortunate event that a dryer mishap, or other issues, causes a fire in your home.  To learn more about our fire related services, give us a call at 229-439-2048, We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

A huge storm has just rolled through, or your area has just survived a natural disaster.  You have survived and your family is safe but what about your pet?  Just like your family you need to have a disaster plan for your pets.  Here in Albany and Americus we are no stranger to extreme weather. What is good for you is good for your pets, so be prepared and have a plan. Planning ahead is the key to keeping yourself and your pets safe when a disaster strike!

  1. Microchip your pets

A microchip ID is the best way to ensure you are reunited with your pet if you are separated.  Also make sure you keep the microchip info updated: address or phone number changes are commonly overlooked.  If you don’t update the information it is useless.  You could also list an emergency number of a friend or family member who resides outside of your area.

  1. Keep A Collar and Tag on ALL Dogs & Cats

Make sure you have the pet's name and at least your current phone number (and address if possible) on the tag.  ID on indoor cats is especially important, if there is a disaster they could easily escape.

  1. Create a Buddy System

Create a buddy system in case you are not home. Make arrangements with a trusted neighbor to check on your pets.

  1. Identify Local Animal Shelters

Know where the local animal shelters are located in case your pet does get lost.  Have a current picture as well to help identify them.

  1. Locate a Local Veterinary Clinic

Locating a local veterinarian or animal hospital in the area you are staying in case your pet needs medical care.

  1. Plan a Pet Friendly-Place to Stay

Search in advance of pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, or somewhere you can stay.  Many emergency shelters are not pet-friendly.

  1. Prepare an Emergency Kit for EACH Animal

Stock up and be prepared now for items your pet will need during a disaster.  Store these items in an easy-to-grab container. Some basic items to include are: one-week food supply, one-week fresh water, medication your pet may need, copies of vaccination records, current picture of you with your pets to identity them and claim ownership, temporary ID tags with the contact info of someone in an unaffected area, carrier and/or leash for each animal.

Remember to prepare now, after the disaster has occurred it is too late.  The last thing you want after an emergency or disaster is to have something happen to your furry family members.

The bathroom and room look better than before the damage. Andy and his crew showed up and went right to work...” – S. Jackson, google.com

“Great experience using SERVPRO to have the vents and ducts cleaned. Shaun explained the process and helped us in taking care of an unexpected problem he discovered while cleaning. The FYI on Lightning

2/19/2021 (Permalink)

Lightning striking behind a house with SERVPRO logo If lightning, or other storm conditions, cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is Here to Help!

Thunderstorms are a frequent occurrence in Southwest Georgia, and along with these storms often comes lightning.  Lightning strikes can be dangerous for both people and property, creating the possibility of bodily injury, risk of property fire, and electrical issues for homes or businesses.

Following are some tips from the National Weather Service to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe from lightning:

Lightning Safety Once Indoors:

  1. Stay off electronic equipment, such as computers or corded phones, that put you in direct contact with electricity.
  2. Avoid plumbing, such as sinks and bathtubs, as metal piping can transmit electrical current.
  3. Stay away from windows and doors; the safest area of the building is an interior room.
  4. Do not lean against concrete walls or lie on concrete floors.

Lightning Strike Outdoor Risk Reduction Tips:

If you find yourself outside with no shelter option during a lightning storm, the following actions can help reduce the risk of injury from a lightning strike:

  1. Search for lower ground- Avoid hills, cliffs, mountains, or any other natural structure elevates you.
  2. Immediately get out of and away from all bodies of water.
  3. Stay away from objects that can easily conduct electricity, such as metal fences and power lines.
  4. Never seek shelter under an isolated tree, as the tree can serve as a conductor for a lightning bolt.

Additionally, State Farm provides these tips for protecting your property from lightning during a thunderstorm:

  1. Use surge protectors for your electronic devices or consider installing a whole home surge protection system. Whole home systems absorb larger surges that come from outside your home. This device can be installed on the electrical meter by the utility company, or next to the electric service panel by an electrician.
  2. Have your property’s grounding system check by a professional. Many unsafe situations related to lighting occur when a home or business is not properly grounded, allowing electricity to flow through the walls, increasing the risk of fire.

If recent storms have caused damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048 for help.  Our team of highly trained professionals offers 24/7 emergency response and will help make your damage “Like it never even happened.”

Water incidents in your property can cause a chain reaction of interrelated issues. These issues may include problems with odor, microbial bacteria, fungi, or soiling of your possessions. SERVPRO restoration services are comprehensive in their approach to your home and can stop damage as well as putting in place proven methods to reverse it. Usually, we start by thoroughly removing water from the property, then drying using proper drying methods.

Bringing venting box fans to your home, as well as the careful placement of portable heating, can help to encourage natural evaporation. Natural evaporation is useful in removing moisture that may have absorbed into furnishings, upholstery, or flooring. Using moisture probes, SERVPRO can accurately assess the moisture content of any given material and can keep returning during the restoration service to ensure reaching our goals.

Mold Remediation

Indoor air quality is becoming increasingly prominent in the restoration service industry. Often, homeowners are surprised by quite how many toxins can exist in a home environment. The issue is especially pertinent in homeowners that have mold damage in their homes. Molds breed by releasing microscopic spores into the surrounding atmosphere. These spores can cause unpleasant odors as well as ingestion when inhaling indoor air. SERVPRO takes decisive action during mold remediation to ensure the spread is limited and your air-quality restored.

Setting up containment is an essential part of the restoration. Usually, an area of your home that shows evidence of mold growth needs quarantining. The removal of mold colonies or demolition of infested materials increases airborne spores. SERVPRO applies negative air pressure when performing controlled demolitions to ensure that the spread of spores is under control. Also, we may use physical barriers such as polyurethane sheeting to prevent microscopic spores from escaping.

Airborne particles are frequently invisible to the naked eye. This invisibility makes it challenging for a homeowner to assess or act against unwanted indoor air particles. Using high-efficiency particulate air-filters (HEPA), SERVPRO technicians can remove particles from the air that are as small as 0.3 microns. Air scrubbing equipment combined with deodorizing methods saves time on the turnaround of your restoration service.

Storm Damage Restoration

Storms can expose your home to outdoor elements as well as pathogens that may enter in floodwaters. Extraction is the most effective method of controlling storm damage in your home. However, to be truly useful, you need to combine rapid extraction with careful cleaning and drying. At SERVPRO, we often find homeowners suffering from microbial growth or mold issues traced back to initial flooding several weeks or months before.

Our restoration services focus on a complete, thorough approach to both the removal and drying of moisture in your home. When water is extracted and dried, it can leave behind microbes or stain on the flooring materials of your home. We use rotary floor machines to both loosen soiling from hard surfaces and apply pre-conditioning agents to soft ones like carpets. Rotary machines not only help to dislodge severe soiling but can help to buffer floors and leave them in a preloss condition.

Flooding as a result of stormy conditions can seem unfair. SERVPRO can help you to redress the balance by providing expert technicians who can complete the job on time and on-budget. If the damage necessitates relocation temporarily, we can perform the vital mitigation tasks needed to prevent your home from suffering permanent damage in the interim period. SERVPRO restoration services are available to all residents in an emergency.

Fire Damage Restoration

If your heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system are on, it can cause extensive fire damage to your home. Air entering the supply side can overload filters causing hot smokes to travel through ventilation shafts. Return side outlets can then end up spewing soot, odor, and ash into unaffected regions of the house. SERVPRO restoration services incorporate a comprehensive game plan for HVAC inspection, cleaning, and replacement of ventilation ducts.

Hot smokes are attracted to cooler surfaces, which include the metal insides of a ventilation shaft. These can deposit thick soiling onto the inner sides of an HVAC system, which can be challenging and technical to clean. SERVPRO restoration services can remove both return and supply-side air ducts to carry out in-depth inspections. Using air whips, we can dislodge loose soiling, which can then vacuum out using negative air pressure machines. Cleaning of the interior closest to the wall- where soiling builds up- can be cleaned using water and oil-based solvents.

Once your HVAC is clean, we can begin to perform repairs. Cavities opened with a circular drill for negative air pressure machine access can be resealed using aluminum plating. We can replace ducts in every room inexpensively. Return side ventilation filters need replacing to ensure that odor remains under control, and your home brought to a preloss condition.

Home emergencies are unexpected and, at times, seem unfair. Contact SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 for assistance with mold, storm, fire, or water-related incidents.

Important Information on Fire Damage Responsibilities

call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus if you are the victim of fire damage at (229) 439- 2048

A fire can be devastating and affect the lives of both tenants and owners. Understanding the responsibilities of both can make the recovery process after a fire significantly smoother. Find out what the tenant and owner responsibilities are after a fire and how the experts at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus can have your property looking like new.

Rental Properties: Who is Responsible for Fire Damage?

According to the National Fire Protection Association, non-wildfire structural fires cost Americans over $11 Billion in 2019. Living through a fire is stressful, especially when it comes to dealing with the aftermath. From cleaning to recovering your lost goods, the entire process is full of heartbreak.

The effects of fire damage are even worse in tenant/landlord relationships. Determining who is at-fault and untangling the legal mess can lead to litigation and sleepless nights.

Preparation is the best way to avoid much of the stress of dealing with fire damage. Landlords and tenants should understand their responsibilities before signing a lease. They should also know their roles in the fire restoration process.

Who is responsible for coordinating cleanup? What insurance policies are needed?

Answering questions like these makes navigating the process much smoother.

Landlord Responsibilities

The property owner is responsible for providing a safe living space for the tenant, which means addressing potential fire hazards. Items like bad wiring, unsafe appliances, and construction that does not meet building code can pose a fire risk.

After a fire, the landlord will need to work with their insurance company to restore the building. In most cases, the property owner has to pay for structural repairs, as well as replace building fixtures like cabinets and plumbing.

In most cases, the landlord is not responsible for replacing the tenant’s property, only items that come with the rental.

Tenant Responsibilities

The tenant is liable for their personal property, such as furniture, clothing, and electronics. Many property owners require that tenants have renter's insurance for precisely this reason.  These policies cover their personal belongings in the event of natural disasters, theft, and other incidents.

Even more important, renter’s insurance can pay for fire damage should the tenant be at fault. If the tenant was cooking unsafely or simply knocked over a candle, they could be held responsible for repaying the damages.

Who Caused the Fire?

Insurance companies want to avoid paying out large amounts, so they will want to know who started the fire.

If the tenant can show that the fire was due to poor maintenance on the landlord's part, the landlord may be liable for the renter's property. Similarly, if it's clear that the fire was the tenant's fault, the landlord may seek damages and compensation from the tenant.

In both cases, every party must be adequately insured, but this is especially important for landlords.

Property owners must have insurance that covers the damage to the building and fixtures. More importantly, they need to let their insurer know that someone is renting the property. Without a landlord policy, the owner would not receive compensation for lost rent payments and could be underinsured.

The Recovery Process

After the fire, the owner and renter need to document everything. If possible, walk through the property and take photos and videos.

Both parties should notify their insurance companies as soon as possible after the fire. The insurers will investigate the cause of the fire and determine the financial cost. To do this, the insurance company will send an adjuster to review the fire damage.

Even if the fire was small, it helps to call the fire department for an objective view. They can inspect the cause and demonstrate how the fire spread.

Unless there's clear evidence that the tenant caused the fire, it falls on the landlord to work with a building restoration service or fire restoration companies.

Fire restoration service is about more than just repairing fire and smoke damage — it's also about water removal and water cleanup. In many cases, the water used to extinguish the fire will flood the property. If this water is allowed to seep into the floors and walls, it may result in mold growth and unsafe living conditions.

Typically, it's in the landlord's best interest to work with a commercial cleaning service that offers comprehensive fire restoration and addresses secondary damage as well, such as mold removal, flood cleanup, and even an air duct cleaning service.

About SERVPRO of Albany and Americus

There will be sleepless nights after a fire, but there are ways to mitigate that stress. With the right preparation, insurance, and response, both parties can start the restoration and compensation process.

If you've been the victim of a fire and need a cleanup service, trust the experts at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus. They are your local fire damage restoration service.

Home Fire Pit Tips

For many families its a tradition to enjoy the nights outside around a homemade fire pit! Many of us are looking forward to spending time gathering around them to enjoy time with family and friends. Before you start dreaming of moonlit nights and toasted marshmallows, take a moment to check out some of these tips from Allstate to remember.

Backyard Fire Pit Safety Tips:

  • Whether you prefer a built-in or portable fire pit, choose one that is not too large for the area. The pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials as well as away from trees, fences, sheds, power lines, and telephone wires, 25 feet away from apartment or multi residence buildings.
  • Make sure that the seating area is large enough and properly placed for comfort and ventilation.
  • Check wind direction before lighting a fire.
  • Don’t use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) to light or relight fires.
  • To start the fire, use a lighter to ignite crumpled pieces of paper covered with small sticks. Then, add larger sticks and a log or two to keep it burning.
  • Burn only dry material. Damp material will create excess smoke.
  • Use a commercial fire pit screen on top to help prevent large amber from leaving the controlled area.
  • Don’t wear flammable clothing (like nylon) or any loose-fitting clothing.
  • Never leave the fire unattended, and keep pets and children far away from the fire as they will be attracted to it.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or bucket of water nearby.
  • As the fire dies down, use a shovel and spread out the ashes to allow them to cool down. Then slowly pour water over those ashes and watch them closely to be sure that no burning embers remain or reignite. Put the cooled ashes in a specially designated ash storage metal can.

Be Familiar with your Flood Insurance Policy

11/9/2020 (Permalink)

call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 - image of flooded house Call SERVPRO of Albany & Americus if you sustain any flood damage at 229.439.2048

Flood insurance is something that is very important to have if you live in an area that is susceptible to water-related storm damage. But this type of policy does not cover everything.

Look over your individual policy to find out exactly where you are and are not covered.  Learn what type of damage is not covered by most flood insurance policies below.

Internal Malfunctions

Some homeowners believe that all water damage is covered. but this is not the case . Flood damage only covers water damage that is a result of external sources like excess rainwater or a hurricane. If a pipe bursts and causes a “flood” in your basement, this will not be covered.

Swimming Pools

Another common misconception is that because your pool is outside your home, it will be covered.  If a crack in the liner causes the water to drain into your home, this will also not be covered.

Secondary Damage

While you may be covered for water that is a result of a storm, any residual effects will be your responsibility. For instance, your policy should cover extraction of excess rainwater. But if moisture remains, which leads to mold, your flood insurance will not cover this.

Living Expenses

A flood in your home may force you to relocate until the remediation process is completed. Living expenses, such as hotels and food during this time period will not be covered by your flood policy.

As mentioned above, look at your flood insurance policy to find the limitations so that you are not surprised in the event of flood damage.  If you do sustain storm-related flood damage, call SERVPRO of Albany & Americus! 229.439.2048

Preparing for Severe Weather in Albany and Americus

Severe Weather Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

Preparing For Severe Weather

Are you ready if severe weather strikes your area tomorrow? Where you live will determine the type of storms you’re most likely to face. Follow these safety measures and general tips to help you prepare.

Preparing for a Tornado

Do the Following:

  • Follow the NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or TV newscasts. Obey the instructions given by local emergency officials.
  • Keep watch outside for signs of a tornado, like a dark sky, large hail, low-lying or fast-moving clouds, or roaring sounds.
  • Learn to recognize emergency alerts. The phrase "tornado watch" means a tornado is possible, while "tornado warning" means a funnel cloud has been spotted.
  • If a tornado warning is issued, immediately take shelter in the basement or storm cellar. If your home doesn’t have an underground room, hunker in an interior bathroom.

Preparing for a Thunderstorm

Thunderstorms are dangerous, as we have seen in the past, because they always produce lightning and can produce hail, strong winds, flash floods, tornadoes and wildfires. Thunderstorms can occur anywhere in the US and are most common during the summer.

Do the Following:

  • Prepare your home by shuttering windows and doors, and unplugging sensitive electronics.
  • Prepare your property by removing damaged tree branches that could fall during a storm, and bringing outdoor objects inside.
  • Watch the sky and tune in to your NOAA Weather Radio for information.
  • Learn to recognize emergency alerts. A "severe thunderstorm watch" means stormy conditions are likely to occur. A "severe thunderstorm warning" means they exist somewhere in the area.
  • If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, danger is imminent. Seek shelter immediately. Stay in a hard-topped vehicle if there are no buildings.

Levels of Commercial Damage

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 You can trust SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for your commercial mitigation, restoration, and cleaning needs!

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus handles not only residential damage and restoration, but commercial as well.

There are three levels of commercial damage that are considered:

Level 1

Level 1 is a small commercial loss typically involving 15,000 square feet or less of affected floor space. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a small commercial loss may include, but are not limited to, a stand-alone retail establishment, a small church, a daycare facility, a small shopping center, a small warehouse or manufacturing facility, or a stand-alone administrative building. A Level 1 loss can also be a small portion of a much larger structure.

Level 2

Level 2 is a midsize commercial loss typically involving 15,000 to 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved are usually multi-level or greatly divided spaces. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 2 loss may include, but are not limited to, a small multi-family property, a midsize church or school, a small shopping center, a multi-tenant administration facility, or a midsize warehouse or manufacturing facility. A Level 2 loss can also be just a portion of a much larger structure.

Level 3

Level 3 is a large commercial loss typically involving more than 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved will likely be large multi-level structures. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 3 loss can include, but are not limited to, a large church, hospital, school, or university; a large multi-family property; a mid- to high-rise retail or administration facility; a large industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse facility; or a large strip-style shopping center or shopping mall. This is the level at which it would be appropriate to refer to the project as a “large loss.”

Once our team determines the level of loss, the property is further assessed, and a team of appropriate size is dispatched to get the job done quickly and efficiently, and return your business to operation “Like it never even happened.”

When Lightning Strikes Your Home

7/6/2020 (Permalink)

call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 When lightning strikes, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus strikes back! Call us today at (229)-439-2048

Myth: Lightning never strikes in the same place twice.

Fact: As it turns out, lightning is more likely than not to strike twice in the same location. Lightning favors the path of least resistance.

Lightning must interact with other environmental conditions before fires can result. Ignition depends upon sufficient heat production from the lightning, weather, and fuel conditions to ignite combustible materials.

The most effective fire starters are "dry" lightning storms -- thunderheads from which little precipitation reaches the ground and which commonly occur after droughts or dry seasons. Dry lightning is especially likely when the earth's surface moisture dries out.

The lightning strokes they generate are responsible for over 10% of the total number of fires per year in the United States alone. By contrast, lightning fires account for about 20% of burned wildfire acreage.

Lightning strikes can cause significant damage to your home or business. Often you will not see signs of the damage at first due to the damage hiding in attics or inside walls. We suggest that after lightning strikes your home that you call the fire department immediately even if you do not see flames or smoke. It is also good to remember to call your electrician after a lightning strike to run an electrical diagnostic test.

According to the NFPA from 2007-2011 the U.S. Local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 22,600 fires per year that were started by lightning.

Lighting bolts are estimated to reach up to 50,000 degrees.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus has experienced the aftermath of a fire caused by a lightning strike. The odor, the charred insulation within the attic or walls. We have an experienced team to handle any size fire or water loss.

If your home has been hit by lighting count on SERVPRO of Albany and Americus to make the fire damage “Like it never even happened.”

Terrifying Truth About Laundry

6/29/2020 (Permalink)

call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 If you have any questions regarding water or fire damage give us a call at 229.439.2048

Most of us pride ourselves on being incredibly talented multi-taskers, going through life, and getting stuff done. That’s great and all, but there comes a time where it’s actually dangerous to multi-task. For instance, laundry is not something you want to do while you’re away from home because two major disasters can happen the minute you leave your home.

Water Loss Potential

The first one being a water loss when your washing machine’s water line breaks or starts leaking. Another possibility is the hose hooked up to your washer can actually become detached due to the shaking and shifting of the machine. Wouldn’t that be a fun surprise to come home and see your entire laundry room floor is covered in water? Actually, no. It’s not fun. We would know.

Fire Loss Potential

The second major disaster that is likely to occur is a fire sparking from the clogged lint in your dryer vent. With fires being so unpredictable, we strongly advise you do not hit the start button before you run some errands in town. An extra precaution we advise is cleaning out your lint trap before and after each use, and on a yearly basis, clean out the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.

Lesson Learned

We know it’s tempting to get two things done at once, but this is one task that needs more of your attention and presence.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage event. We can handle any size disaster!

call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 For more information on water damage and prevention call us today at (229) 439-2048

We understand how much of a shock a water loss can be, especially since it doesn’t take much to cause the damage. Some things that can cause water damage include:

  • Bursting or leaking pipes
  • Plumbing Problems
  • Crawl Space, Basement, Attic Concerns
  • Malfunctioning Household Appliances
  • HVAC issues
  • Weather-Related Issues and Natural Disasters

At SERVPRO of Albany and Americus, we want to share some tips on what to look for and how to prevent a water loss.

Maintain and Understand your Indoor Plumbing System

    • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets
    • Inspect showers and tubs
    • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine
    • Know the location of the main shut off valve in your home
    • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system
    • Repair and protect your home’s exterior
    • Caulk and seal windows
    • Inspect your roof
    • Check your downspouts
    • Check sprinklers and irrigation systems

Or, is it a pipe in your front yard? Don’t leave mystery leaks unattended!

Never Walk Away from Your STOVE!

5/12/2020 (Permalink)

In these challenging times it is easy to get  sidetracked.

It happens, especially now…… doing several things at once, spring cleaning, while you have soup on the stove. So you leave the stove, just for a quick minute. Only it’s just never as quick as you anticipate. Meanwhile back in the kitchen….a fire has erupted. It can happen so quickly.

Good Rule: Never leave the stove or turn your back for any period of time.

Think fast!

1) Evaluate – call 911 if it is out of control while gathering family and get to safety

2) Put a metal lid on it

3) Turn off the heat

4) Dump baking soda

5) Chemical fire extinguisher is best as a last resort or if the above options are not available

6) Stop. Let the area sit, cool down, before you address the damage.

NO, NO, NO

1) Do not throw water

2) Do not use a hand towel

We hope you NEVER have to worry about a Fire Damage, but SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is here to help with the clean-up should disaster strike.

Quick thinking will allow the structure's damage to be contained to the kitchen. However soot and smoke damage can occur throughout the residence.

5/12/2020 (Permalink)

Storm Team We are ready for whatever happens. Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for more information at 229-439-2048!

Tornadoes can happen any time of the year. Timing of the system can change but nighttime tornadoes are always more dangerous and require additional planning. The difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning means the difference between taking action or taking precautions.

Know your severe weather terminology.

During a TORNADO WATCH you want to be prepared because a tornado is possible. Which means that conditions are favorable for a tornado to occur.

1. Check for forecast updates.

2. Monitor sky conditions.

3. Know where to take shelter.

During a TORNADO WARNING take action because a tornado is imminent! A warning means that a tornado has been seen or picked up by radar. A warning requires you to take shelter and brace for a potential tornado.

1. Take shelter immediately.

2. Seek further information.

3. Check for forecast updates.

If you have any questions or have been a victim of a tornado and need our assistance WE ARE HERE TO HELP. Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus today at 229-439-2048!

Approaching 2020 Hurricane Season

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

Storm Image Call SERVPRO of Albany & Americus at 229-439-2048

As the 2020 hurricane season approaches, we at SERVPRO of Albany & Americus want to help make sure you are prepared. After recently going through Hurricane Michael, we here in south GA understand that it is not just states that are bordering the ocean that can be affected. These storms are very unpredictable and you can never be too prepared.

While preparing for hurricane season, follow the latest health guidelines from the CDC and your local officials.

Make a list of items to replenish your hurricane supplies and begin to assemble them before hurricane season begins. Just having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isn’t enough. You need plenty to make it through what could be a LONG recovery period too. Water and electricity could be out for a week or more in some storms. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family for at least 3 days, but ideally, 7 days. Also make sure you have extra cash, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and a portable crank or solar powered USB charger to power your cell phone.

Even a subtle roof leak that may not appear obvious from storm damage can produce mold inside of your home.

If you are effected by a storm, WE ARE HERE TO HELP! Our teams are ready and prepared before and after a storm hits. Whether it is a commercial or residential property, we are "ready for whatever happens"

FIVE STEPS TO PUTTING OUT A KITCHEN GREASE FIRE

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

Kitchen Fire For more information on Fire and Smoke Damage call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 24/7 at 229-439-2048.

Over 160,000 home fires happen while people are cooking and, unfortunately, cooking is the leading cause of home fires. About two-thirds of those fires began when food and other cooking materials caught on fire. If you know how to respond to a kitchen fire, and specifically a grease fire, you'll be prepared to minimize damages when an emergency happens. Quick action could reduce the need for fire cleanup and the cost of hiring RESTORATION professionals.

1. Prevent fires by removing flammable items from the area.

Towels, flowing sleeves, curtains, and ingredients that could catch on fire should be moved away from the stove. Clean out burners, so that crumbs and caked-on grease can't burst into flames while you're cooking.

2. Stay with your food.

Too many home chefs get food cooking and then walk into the other room while they wait for pots to boil or pans to heat up. If something in the kitchen does catch on fire, you should be there to quickly respond.

3. Cut off the fire's fuel supply.

One of the quickest ways to put out a cooking fire is to cover the flames with a cookie sheet or a large metal lid. DO NOT POUR WATER ON THE FIRE. Turn off the heat source.

4. Put out the flames with appropriate materials.

Throwing water or baking powder on a grease fire could cause heavy DAMAGE and serious injuries. Be very careful to use baking soda or even a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher to put out kitchen fires if the flames haven't died down. Never use water to put out a grease fire because it will cause the grease to splatter, hitting people and flammable items throughout your kitchen.

5. Contact the fire department from outside the home.

If you haven't been able to put out the fire at this point, it's best to evacuate the home. Once the fire is out of control, you only have a couple of minutes to get everyone out of the house and to safety. Use a cellphone or the neighbor's phone to contact your local fire department.

After the fire is out and the Fire Department has left, Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 24/7 at 229-439-2048 to make it "Like it never even happened."

River Flooding Damage in South Georgia

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

Emergency Ready Plan If you or someone you know experiences a flood in your home or business in the South Georgia area, call SERVPRO of Albany & Americus @ 229-439-2048

River flooding occurs when river levels rise and overflow their banks or the edges of their main channel and inundate areas that are normally dry. This is something that many Albany, and South Georgia residents are all too familiar with but may still not be fully prepared for.

By having a SERVPRO of Albany and Americus Emergency Ready Plan in order you and your family can feel more secure knowing that in the case of a flood there is nothing holding us back from beginning our work and getting your home back "Like it never even happened."

This plan allows for the creation of an emergency ready profile containing critical property information to help speed up the response time after water damage or fire.

During the last flood in Albany and Lee County we went door to door in neighborhoods watching the water levels and the panic in homeowners rise by the second. Many people assume that when the rain stops, so does the rising water. Water continues to rise 24 hours after the rain has stopped and anyone that lives in a flood zone should be prepared. We understand this is a nightmare for any homeowner and our goal is that when you see SERVPRO of Albany and Americus coming that the worst is behind you.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is a national provider that also treats you like family.

Moisture Detection Equipment

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.  Along with cameras, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus uses moisture saturation detection equipment, such as hygrometers.

Water Extraction Equipment

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business. We utilize items such as submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water along with extraction units to perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus utilize industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers to remove any remaining moisture from ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business after extraction. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

Odor Removal and Deodorization

Water and fire damages often cause powerful odors. We use powerful air scrubbers and thermal foggers with deodorization agents to remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Anti-Microbial Treatments

Sometimes, the use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.  SERVPRO of Albany and Americus utilizes deodorization products to control odors from excessive moisture as well as disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

Grilling Safety Tips

Outdoor grilling can be a favorite family activity during the warmer months in Georgia.  It is very important when operating an outdoor grill, whether charcoal or gas, to be aware of the following grilling safety tips to keep yourself and your home safe:

  • Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. You do not want walls, overhangs, or carports catching fire from flames created by the grill.
  • Clean your grill regularly. Grease buildup can serve as a fuel source for flame ups that can easily get out of hand.
  • Check for gas leaks. Gases can easily go undetected when leaking in small amounts, which can lead to the potential for an explosion when lighting.
  • Keep a spray water bottle and fire extinguisher handy while grilling. A spray water bottle can be used to quickly extinguish small flare ups, while a fire extinguisher may be necessary if flames become too large or out of control.

In the unfortunate event that outdoor grilling leads to structure damage, call the professionals of SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048 for help.  We have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to take care of fire damages, both large and small.

3 Fire Extinguisher Facts Every Business Should Know

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Extinguisher Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for ALL of your Fire Restoration needs 24/7 at 229-439-2048.

3 Facts About Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher is a crucial piece of safety equipment that can save lives and spare commercial properties from extensive damage mandating professional cleanup and restoration. Because of this, every business in Albany and Americus area should maintain at least one functional device. To ensure it’s readily available in an emergency, every owner and manager should also recognize three key facts about this vital fire suppression tool.

1. Device Doesn’t Last Forever

Extinguishers do not have an indefinite shelf life. Unfortunately, they also do not typically come with an expiration date sticker.
To determine the viability of your device, you should complete annual inspections and check for compromised components. Specific defects that may make it unusable include a broken handle, missing locking pin or a cracked nozzle. The gauge should also be in the green. If it’s not, replace the device.

2. Multiple Types Exist

A fire extinguisher is designed to battle specific types of infernos. Class K units, for example, can douse a kitchen fire sparked by grease while a Class A device is designated for use with blazes involving ordinary combustibles, such as wood and paper. Additional distinctions include Class C for electrical fires and Class B for flammable liquids.
Attempting to smother flames with the wrong type of device can be ineffective. To combat this potential dilemma, evaluate your company’s specific fire risks and purchase your extinguisher accordingly. Check the canister’s label to confirm the class. You can also purchase a multipurpose device, which can be used against a variety of blazes.

3. Should Be Accessible and Visible

Minimizing fire damage requires prompt action. To ensure an expedited response, mount your extinguisher in a safe, accessible place and post signage to identify its location. You should also ensure staff recognize this area and refrain from blocking the site.
Because an inferno can erupt suddenly, having a functioning fire extinguisher easily accessible is a crucial safety strategy. Understanding key aspects of the device can ensure it’s in prime operating condition and ready to perform in an emergency.

Flooded Office

7/30/2019 (Permalink)

If you experience a serious disaster at your office or facility call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

There is never a good time to experience a property disaster.

Providing emergency property damage services for commercial establishments is one of the main services we provide at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus.

Water damage/flooding events are the most common disaster at offices and other commercial properties. Fire is second, followed by autos crashing into structures, falling trees, vandalism and others.

There are many restoration companies that are prepared to dry a wet building, only a few companies are equipped to help keep a company open or return them quickly to operation. It’s the business interruption solution services that can make the most difference to business survival. Insurance can pay to restore the business and in some cases even cover lost revenue. However, if a building remains closed so long that customers go elsewhere, then the “damage” is really more devastating than the structural repair.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus understands how to dry a wet structure. We can also help with electronics, office equipment, manufacturing equipment and the other parts of a business that might be impacted. Our team can set up electrical power generators and lighting. We will place storage pods and tents at a job site along with security so that temporary workstations can be set up.

If you experience a serious disaster at your office or facility call us at 229-439-2048.

Content Manipulation

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 24/7 for all of your Water Restoration needs at 229-439-2048.

Unless you have experienced a serious water damage event at your office or home, you may not be aware that sometimes contents and furniture must be removed from a water damaged location.

Outstanding technicians work hard to remove furniture so it won't become ruined by the wet (humid) interior environment. Or, they may have to remove contents so they're not "in the way." It's a no-brainer to understand that drying or repairing an empty room is far easier and faster than working around a furnished space.

At SERVPRO of Albany and Americus, we will use our experience to determine when a "pack-out" is the best option. When it's the right choice, we will let you know and we will even speak with your insurance adjuster or property manager.

When we perform a packout, often on an emergency basis, we have a company motto, "SERVPRO of Albany and Americus.. the careful movers."  That phrase really means something because the faster we work at removing contents, the better chance we have of protecting and saving them. However, there's no point removing furniture only to damage it during the pack out. That's why we put extra "care" in the moving process.

At SERVPRO of Albany and Americus we're well known for performing fire cleanup, water damage mitigation, mold remediation and specialized cleaning... we are also proud of the support service we provide such as pack-out and storage.

Should your office or home suffer any type of damage, we're here to make it... "Like it never even happened."

At your service... SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 229-439-2048.

How to Prepare for Water Damage in 5 Steps

7/25/2019 (Permalink)

Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

Most water damage that happens to your home is uncontrollable and unpredictable. It could potentially cost you thousands of dollars. When the water starts coming into your home, there is not much you can do to stop it but there is a couple things you can do to prepare for it. Here are a few steps you can take so you can be prepared for the worst.

Step 1: Stop the Source of the Water
If it is possible, stop the water at its source. If it has to do with your plumbing then turn off your water line as soon as possible. This will help with decreasing the amount of damage.
When the flooding occurs from storm water, there is no stopping a storm but you can try and divert the water away from your home by blocking entry points.

Step 2: Think Safety
If it is safe, then shut off all electrical sources by turning the circuit breakers or unplug devices. Water and electricity don’t mix, remember that. Make sure everyone, including children, are away from standing water.

Step 3: Protect Your Possessions
Try and remove or raise your furniture from flood water. Water soaked furniture begin to mold very quick and you the last thing you will want is to throw away all of your belongings after a flood. Protect the things that are irreplaceable rather then carpet and other flooring.

Step 4: Contact Your Insurance Company
Now is the time to call your insurance and see how they will approach the water remediation. All insurance companies have professionals who specialize in this kind of emergency so they will have the best people to restore your home back to normal. Do not try to remove the water by yourself. You can just end up cause more damage.

Step 5: Work With the Professionals
When you are choosing a company to perform your water remediation; you need to compare everyone highs and lows. Make sure they have good reviews and are available at your earliest request. SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is highly dependable and will exceed your expectations for your water remediation.

Board Up Services

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for all of your Board Up needs 24/7 at 229-439-2048.

There are so many ways that a structure can be damaged and could require emergency board up services of windows and doors, or large gaps in walls... Wind damage, falling trees and falling tree limbs, vehicles crashing into buildings are common causes. Vandalism and robbery accounts for many window board up jobs too.

One Surprisingly Effective Way to Succeed With Storm Damage Remediation

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

As you inspect your flood damaged home, make a plan to contact the IICRC certified and experienced team at SERVPRO for water removal services.

Removing water from a property quickly can significantly reduce the likelihood of permanent damages. However, in a flood situation, this is not always possible. You may need to evacuate the property or have returned from a weekend away to find your home ankle deep in water. Porous materials, like those that make up your sofa, armchairs or other soft furnishings as well as wood, can imbibe water over time making damages harder to remediate.

Our team is made up of highly trained individuals who can help you with flood damage. Typically, the longer water is allowed to stand the more harm it causes and we can quickly mobilize equipment like gas-powered pumps or truck-mounted water extractors to remove it. Where there is prolonged exposure we may need to use a different technique.

Dehumidifiers are commonly used in a home environment, particularly in humid periods of the year. They work by drawing moisture from the air and replacing it with dry air. Since water naturally migrates from wet to dry, dehumidifiers can also be used to draw moisture out of porous surfaces by drying the surrounding air to 40 GPP- grains of moisture per pound- or below.

SERVPRO can deploy two types of dehumidifier depending on the scale and breadth of the task at hand. Refrigerant dehumidifiers are the more common of the two. We use them in 80% of the services we complete. They are particularly useful in drawing moisture from fabrics like carpets as well as drywall. The other type of dehumidifier is desiccant, which use chemicals to dry below 40 GPP. These can be effective for denser materials, like hardwood or concrete floors, that have suffered prolonged exposure to moisture.

Removing the majority of standing water from a flooded property is a straightforward task. However, tackling that remaining percentage requires expertise and the right dehumidification equipment. SERVPRO is capable of assessing and applying advanced dehumidifiers to help restore your home to its preloss condition and preventing secondary damages after flooding.

Give your home the best chance of getting back to preloss condition, contact SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048 today.

Water Damaged Property

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for all of your water mitigation needs 24/7 at 229-439-2048.

Ever Experienced Water Damage to Your Property? That's a good question. Over the years SERVPRO of Albany and Americus has responded to many unusual sources of water damage including: Children watering indoor plants with a garden house; aquariums falling over during an earthquake; and carpenters driving nails through hidden pipes. There are many more common ways that a building can become damaged by water such as: Ground water flooding, rain storms, burst water delivery pipes, plumbing backups, failed/leaking water heaters, etc.

One of the strangest water damage situations that our company responded to was in a four story Victorian house in Americus, Georgia, that had been converted to small apartments.

During a domestic argument, a wife slashed a waterbed that was in a bedroom on the top floor. The 100 gallons of water flowed down through the floor causing flooding to many rooms below. The water damage affected every resident in the house.

When our crew arrived, we were amazed to see the interior rooms with ceilings dripping as if it were raining indoors. Regardless of the source or the size of the flooding, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus can quickly mitigate (stop and contain) the damage and get the drying and recovery underway.

Our experience is vast. We work in residential, retail and commercial settings. Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 24/7 at 229-439-2048.

Why to Board Up After a Fire

5/28/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 29-439-2048 ***24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK***

If your commercial/residential property has experienced a fire, there are several reasons why you might want to board up structural damage or windows. In addition to keeping the external elements out of a building with fire damage, boarding up can also prevent additional losses due to looting and make the fire cleanup process easier.

Here are four reasons to board-up after a fire.

1. There is still viable stock on the premises. If products that appear viable remain in the building, you should consider boarding up. These items may require assessment and cleaning and may not be fit for sale, but having them properly processed rather than stolen can be helpful for insurance purposes.

2. You want to protect electronics and other valuables. Depending on the extent of the fire damage, you may be able to restore some electronics or other valuable property to working condition. Loss can be far more expensive than restoration or covered replacement.

3. You need to keep out the elements. If the structure of your property has sustained extensive damage, you should try to keep the elements out. Exposure to additional water, wind, or sunlight can compound the damage caused by smoke residue and soot.

4. You want to limit soot damage. It is generally a good idea to reduce foot traffic on the scene of a recent fire. When soot gets embedded into carpeting or upholstery, it can be much more difficult to restore these materials to a pre-fire condition.

Talk to restoration experts at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus, about whether boarding up is a good strategy for preventing loss and limiting damage after a fire. Your major concern is likely to be how to recover from fire damage as quickly and completely as possible. Preventing looting and exposure to the elements can make fire cleanup more successful. Don’t hesitate to call us (229) 439-2048.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048 to schedule your dryer vent cleaning.

You may think that you have checked all the boxes when it comes to protecting your home from fire, but can you name the most overlooked source of home fires?  This culprit accounts for more than 2,900 home fires and $35 million dollars in property damage each year.  Would you be surprised to learn that we are referring to home dryers?  There are a variety of ways that dryers can inadvertently cause fires.  Not properly cleaning lint filters and dryer vents accounts for nearly 34% of those fires.  When was the last time you had your vents cleaned?  The general recommendation is that dryer exhaust vents be cleaned and inspected at least once a year to prevent buildup that could lead to a fire.  Those recommendations are based on a typical size household with standard use.  Commercial dryers or those used for more than the standard purposes should be cleaned more frequently. Did you know that SERVPRO of Albany and Americus offers dryer vent cleanings as part of our wide range of specialized cleaning services?  Give us a call today at 229-439-2048 to schedule your cleaning.

Are You Covered?

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus 229.439.2048

When it comes to your homeowner’s insurance policy sometimes it is hard to know exactly what to look for when checking your coverage.  Many times, the average consumer doesn’t consider all the variables and the multitude of “what if’s” that could occur and cause damage to their home.  SERVPRO of Albany and Americus wants to help you make sure you are covered BEFORE disaster strikes.  One of the most common areas of gaps in coverage can occur in water loss situations.  An overwhelming majority of policies do not provide coverage for flood damage that is incurred from “rising water”.   This term is how most insurance companies will differentiate whether water damage is covered under the policy.  Rising water would be determined to be flood damage and most often only covered if you bought an additional flood policy.  Other water damage that would be covered would be water that filled the home as the result of a collapsed roof, broken windows etc.  If you aren’t sure of what your homeowner’s policy covers, we strongly encourage you to contact your agent today and ask questions.

Flood Water Facts

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Across the United States, flooding is one of the most commonly widespread weather-related disasters. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is always potential for flood damage.

Though you may have never experienced a flood in the past, there’s no level of security to assure that you won't in the future.  In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities.

According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  The ARC offers the following safety tips:

  • Stay away from floodwaters as much as possible.  If you approach a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and water are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water.  They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If your home or business is ever affected by a flood, contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048.  Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task.  The SERVPRO system is prepared to handle any size disaster.  The sooner work begins; the sooner your home or business can return “Like it never even happened.”

Smoke and Soot Clean Up

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

What To Do If Your Basement Floods

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

4 out of 5 homes are ruined due to unexpected floods yearly.

While heavy rainfall is a very common cause for flooding basements, there are several other causes of basement flooding. Some of these major causes are:

    • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
    • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
    • Storm sewer backup
    • Sanitary sewer backup
    • Foundation drainage failure
    • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Because basements are the lowest part of a home and generally built underground, the basement is prone to suffering from flooding and high moisture levels. High moisture levels are worrisome as well due to the risk of microbial growth.

If you have any questions or need help, call us at (229) 439-2048

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus will always respond to your call within 1 hour, begin the water extraction process within 4 hours, and notify the adjuster no later than 8 hours from the time of your loss. If the water damage is not handled quickly and properly it can cause severe damage to your home’s structure. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get. SERVPRO is here to help.

When Water Damage Moves Beyond the Stained-Ceiling Stage in Your Home

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for your water damage needs at 229-439-2048.

Water is everywhere around us, but when this life-giving liquid exists in our homes, we expect it to remain where it cannot do any harm. Sometimes it escapes and makes its presence known but in seemingly minor ways.

Other times, however, your property seems to develop not only visible and unsightly water damage but also the kind that ruins the interior of your home. What many homeowners in Albany never realize about water damage can end up costing them quite a bit of money.

Any type of water leakage, regardless of how slight it seems, means that water exists inside your home in places where it should not. Stains may not seem like severe damage, but they often indicate precisely that. The moisture creating stains on upper walls and ceilings did not appear there like magic. This moisture traveled there to these locations from other areas of your home.

As it traveled through the materials comprising your home, it affected them. Because this often happens within areas that you rarely or never see, it stays hidden and unknown to you. Significant water damage typically can happen months before stained ceilings show up in your home's interior. A side effect of this intrusive water, possibly from a leaky toilet, a loose shingle, or even a window left open during a rainstorm, often includes stains on upper areas of rooms and possibly wavy or blistering paint.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus technicians can help determine the pathways the water took and examine the materials from Point A to Point B for damage. Many facets of your home can become compromised, damaged, or worse by causing other types of damage to start developing in your home. Microbial populations can proliferate once water becomes available to them. Who wants mold growing in their home? Drywall and Sheetrock can begin to crumble.

Wherever damaging effects occur, we can skillfully mitigate the problem and make your home "Like it never even happened." quickly. We also ensure that the source of water is fixed and cannot create future damage that you must deal with later. In the case of major leaks or drips, we advise the homeowner to call a certified plumber.
SERVPRO of Albany and Americus can help you whenever you find water damage and its telltale stains. Call us at (229) 439-2048 to reach our 24-hour helpline and get to the bottom of what ails your home.

Keeping Your Commercial Property Fire Ready

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

Keeping your commercial property fire ready is vital in order to avoid disaster. Your livelihood and that of your staff depends on your business, and you will want to protect it. Being ready for any kind of disaster is always a good idea. We are sharing some tips here that can help you get your property ready in the event of a fire:

Ensure that your building or suite is visibly lettered and numbered so that emergency responders can easily find your location in a timely manner. Numbers should contrast with the background used, such as black/white, while the numerals should be no less than six inches in height.

Fire extinguishers should be no more than 75 feet from work areas for easy access, and they should be mounted in a highly visible spot that is easy to get to. Make sure your extinguishers are serviced at least once a year by a licensed fire extinguisher company.

Exits need to be clearly marked with EXIT signage and should be illuminated at all times, with a battery backup for power outages. Exits should also be clear of any obstructions so that people can get out safely and quickly. Emergency lighting should be kept in working order, and the area around the building outside clear of debris and plant material, reducing the fire risk outdoors as well.

Stored materials need to be stacked at least two feet below the ceiling and be orderly. For buildings with an automatic sprinkler system, 18 inches of clearance is required, allowing smoke to collect up high, which gives people adequate time to exit and the sprinklers a clear area for their spray pattern.

Electrical outlets should have no more than one item per outlet plugged in, which may include a power strip with a circuit breaker. All electrical cords should be kept in good repair and replaced when needed.

Trash receptacles need to be kept at least five feet away from combustible roofs, windows, and door openings and not stored in the path of exits.

Have your sprinkler system tested and serviced every 12 months or less by a licensed fire sprinkler company. This practice should also be used for your fire alarm system.

If your business involves cooking foods, make sure your stove hood has been cleaned at least once every year to prevent excessive grease buildup. Ceiling exhaust fans and bathroom heater/light/fan combinations can also be a risk due to a buildup of dust and grease, resulting in increased operating temperatures.

Make sure your local fire department has valid contact information on file for your commercial property.

For more information call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

Storm Proofing Your Garage

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

When planning to protect your home from storms, make your garage one of your first priorities. Your garage is one of the most vulnerable areas in your home when it comes to high winds. Here are some tips to stormproof your garage:

Install a garage door with a high wind-resistance rating. Storms that bring with them extreme levels of wind will cause the most damage; when a garage is breached, the winds will batter the rest of your home. Water will start to come in, and even just an inch of water can cause unwanted, and costly, damage. If you live in an area prone to tornadoes, it’s recommended that you invest in a door that can withstand winds of 130 mph or higher. Doors with high impact-ratings will protect your home and belongings from flying debris.

Install a bracing system. You can reinforce your garage door with proper bracing. Most garage doors are secured only by the tracks or hinges, which will be no help during a powerful storm. A bracing system works by anchoring the door to the walls and floors and into each hinge.

Maintain your garage door. If there are any holes, cracks or breaches, these will allow storm winds through your garage door. Perform a monthly inspection and look for any of these types of issues as well as problems with the weather stripping or any parts of the garage door mechanisms and functionality. Perform the needed maintenance as soon as possible to stay in storm-readiness.

Secure all windows. If you have windows in your garage, these will also be weak points during extreme weather. Ensure they are in good repair and that the weather stripping is in great shape. Having wrought-iron window protection installed as well can go a long way to protect your glass from flying debris, such as rocks or tree limbs.

Install drainage and flood vents. Make sure that this vulnerable area of your home is properly outfitted for the drainage of large amounts of water. You can have a trench drain installed in front of this area and on the sides of your driveway to divert water, and flood vents inside the garage can drain any water coming inside quickly before levels rise and cause damage.

Here at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus, we handle clean up after house and business fires, and are well equipped to handle water damage. Mold remediation is also one of our specialties. Call us at 229-439-2048.

The photos on the left represent the control group. The pieces of drywall pictured encountered zero excess moisture.

The photos in the center mimic a water damage that occurs during the winter months and goes undiscovered until the spring when weather warms up and mold spores reach their "happy" place (70+ degrees). These pieces of drywall were submerged in water for ten minutes then placed in Ziploc bags to observe.

The column of pictures on the right represents a DIY water mitigation job. This happens more than you would think. A homeowner dries and cleans the water damage on their own without the help of a professional. Approaching a water damage this way often leads to the structure not being fully dried and susceptible to mold growth. These pieces of drywall were submerged in water for 30 seconds and then placed in the Ziploc bags for observation.

The results are right on. Mold growth was seen a mere 7 days after encountering moisture... and after 4 weeks?!? No thank you! It's of utmost importance to have water mitigated correctly after a loss. But, if it's not, we are here for you as well. Mold mitigation just happens to be one of SERVPRO of Albany and Americus specialties.

Mold and Your Health

For more information about Mold call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048.

Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all.  Areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas.

Molds are part of the natural environment. Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet. There are many types of mold, and none of them will grow without water or moisture.

The key to mold control is moisture control. If mold is a problem in your home, you should clean up the mold promptly and ix the water problem.

It is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on. You can prevent damage to your home and furnishings, save money, and avoid potential health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating mold growth.

Outdoor Grilling Safety Tips

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

July is the peak month for grill fires. Roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Here are some helpful tips to the homeowners getting ready to grill up some goodies this summer.

1.) Make sure that your grill is placed far away from your home.

2.) Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

3.) Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

4.) NEVER leave your grill unattended.

5.) If you use starter fluid, never add any other flammable liquids to the fire.

6.) When you’re done grilling, be sure to let the coals cool completely before disposing of them into a metal container.

Even when all proper precautions are taken, some accidents are inevitable. In case of a fire, try and use a fire extinguisher. If the situation is worse, call 911. Once the fire is put out and the damage is assessed, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus. We would love to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Three Helpful Tips For A Mold Free Home While Your Away!

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Summer is the BEST time for family vacations, you want to make sure you're Albany home is the best condition so no tragic situations occur. In order to get the most out of your vacation, you probably want to make sure that your house is in the right condition to leave it. No matter where you live, mold can spread while you aren’t there. It’s important to make sure that you don’t have to come home only to start a cleanup effort. These three easy tips on mold prevention while on vacation should help ease your mind.

  1. Check Home in Advance

As the date of your vacation comes closer, the checklist of things you need to do before you can leave gets longer and longer. The one thing that you don’t want to skip out on is ensuring that there isn’t any mold in your home. The first tip in mold prevention is to make sure that there isn’t any fungus that can spread. If you want extra reassurance, you can have a specialist perform a mold test.

  1. Keep Heat Low

What to do with your thermostat when you leave has everything to do with what time of year you vacation. Heat helps create the perfect environment for mold growth. If you’re leaving in the winter, then it’s a good idea to turn off your thermostat entirely. However, if you’re leaving in the summer, you may want to set it cooler. While you don’t want to waste energy on your air conditioning, you can keep your home at a temperature about five degrees higher than what you find comfortable.

  1. Turn Off Water

Together, moisture and heat can derail your efforts against mold. If you’re leaving for a significant period of time, it’s smart to turn off your water entirely. After all, if there are any leaks while you’re gone, you won’t be able to catch them in time to prevent water damage.

If you’re on vacation, you deserve to relax without worrying about what might go wrong while you’re not there. Simple mold prevention can help reduce the risk of mold. For more mold information call our SERVPRO of Albany and Americus office at (229) 439-2048.

Bathroom Remodeling After Mold Damage

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

When mold infests an Albany home, the damage and the restoration costs can vary widely. If caught quickly after the mold begins growing, both are minor, and the emphasis stays on cleaning and removing mold from surfaces. If the mold has had months to grow unnoticed, then the focus can shift to removal and replacement of affected property, both personal and structural.

When this happens, Albany homeowners have a unique opportunity for remodeling their homes, especially the bathroom. SERVPRO technicians can remove the tiles, shower, bathtub, and other bath items, and replace them at the direction of the homeowner.

Mold rarely penetrates tile surfaces, but it does grow into the grout material that seals the tiles in place. The same material also forms a seal between pieces of a shower or bathtub unit, keeping water from leaking or seeping in behind them and causing further damage from wood rot. SERVPRO restoration teams train to remove the grout and tiles carefully.

If mold has grown into the walls behind the tile, our teams can remove and replace those as well. After removing the affected drywall, specialists spray the framing behind them and the surrounding area with an anti-fungal agent to make certain no live mold spores are still present.

Before installing the new panels, the teams use a combination of air movers and fans to increase circulation and dry out the bathroom to reduce the chance of mold growing again. If the interior humidity is very high, they augment these devices with a dehumidifier to draw water from the surrounding air.

With a new wall, it is a perfect time to replace the tiles, or even replace the entire bathtub and shower area with a one- or two-piece, drop-in unit. Technicians can make many of these changes at the homeowner’s discretion, but for very expensive replacement items, the team leader always recommends using the manufacturer’s installation team to set and seal them in place.

A mold infestation is something no homeowner wants to happen in their residence. Cleaning and replacing affected property can be an opportunity to upgrade the home, however. If this is your situation, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at (229) 439-2048  today to begin restoration.

Different Types of Storm Damage

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Wind Damage Restoration

Hurricane damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof, to harsh winds and rains shearing away asphalt tiles. Roof repair of obvious defects usually ensues in the wake of hurricane damage and storm remediation. Correcting roof damage may challenge homeowners after a disaster, since a roof leak may not appear obvious.

How can a roof leak and roof damage escape easy detection in this situation? Wind damage may loosen flashing, eventually causing another roof leak weeks after the storm. Even a subtle roof leak of this nature can produce damp, moldy conditions inside the home. Obtaining fast roof repair may prevent long term interior damage. A wind damage home restoration expert may assist clients in receiving comprehensive roof assessments and roof repair services when hurricane damage afflicts an area. Their expertise helps property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Flooding and Recovery

Flood water frequently poses a risk in coastal areas. Yet heavy rains may cause river flooding miles inland also. If the surrounding terrain cannot absorb ground water, runoff contributes to flood water. Even residents of mountainous areas sometimes sustain varying degrees of flood damage if frozen pipes rupture. Flood pump failures contribute to basement flooding and contaminated ground water in some locations, too.

Flooding may disrupt municipal water systems. Experts need to assess ground water and evaluate the condition of pipes following flood damage. Hiring a storm restoration firm may allow you to begin your cleanup process even before water restoration occurs. (Cleaning before water restoration often proves essential yet challenging.) By relying upon a trained specialist, you'll usually obtain faster storm remediation. These experts may suggest ways to help mitigate flood water damage in the future, for instance, by requesting backup flood pump installation.

Keeping Your Home Safe From Storm Damage

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Storms are dangerous forces of nature that can be brutal, unpredictable, and strike without warning. Because they wreak such serious havoc, it’s important to take measures in keeping your home safe from potential storm damage.

So what can you do to be prepared? For starters, perform a full inspection of your home and its surrounding premises. You can do this personally or professionally. Check for leaks in your roof or windows, and make sure all exterior doors and windows are fitted correctly. Any cracks or gaps can lead to big problems during storms, so it’s important to fix up any you may find right away.

Next, check the condition of your shutters and rain gutters. Make sure they are sturdy and tight. If any are loose, get them fixed and tightened right away. Loose shutters and gutters can become dangerous in a storm because they are unstable and in some cases they can rip away from your house and blow around as debris. The same goes for any unstable large trees or loose tree limbs. Consider trimming back trees with any unhealthy looking branches that could be torn off in a storm.

If your home is older and has a drainage ditch in front of the property, inspect the area around it. Remove debris, dirt, and anything else that could obstruct that flow of water. This will prevent any blockage and clogging that could cause flooding.

Finally, have an emergency plan in place for your family to help ensure their safety in the event of a storm.

When a storm does hit, SERVPRO of Albany and Americus has your back. We’ll take care of any emergency repairs or restorations your home may need. Give us a call at 229-439-2048.

Apartment Water Damages

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

Apartment flood

In an apartment community residence will share walls from the sides and from above and below. When a water damage occurs, it can get out of hand quickly, since a water damage can affect multiple residences. You can never know when an emergency will occur, but it’s in your best interest as a property manager to always be prepared for anything. Taking these measures by the American Apartment Owners Association can help you prevent damage in the future.

  • Inspect the property regularly. It is important to ask about repair needs and to check out major systems on a regular basis. If the problem is caught early, then damage can be minimized or avoided.
Water causes millions of dollars to the rental industry each year. Landlords in updated buildings are seeing damage due to the use of materials that aren’t holding up as expected. Most of the water damage is due to faulty plumbing, which can cause secondary damage like mold and other costly repairs, so it is important to inspect regularly.
  • By acting early when you receive a repair request, then it can help save you money and keep the property in good condition.
  • Pay attention to utility spikes. Whether you pay the utilities, or your tenant complains about a sudden increase, take it seriously. It is a warning sign that something may be spilling out. It can even signal a drug manufacturing operation which one of most costly repair jobs you will ever encounter.
  • Watch the weather. Storms cause significant property damage, and lately we’ve been seeing some monsters. Once the surge is over, check for roof damage, clogged gutters, and poor drainage that may leak into the foundation. The best time to repair old and damaged roofs is when it’s dry.
  • Encourage tenants to carry renters insurance. The main benefit: they won’t ask you to reimburse them for damage. The indirect benefit is making tenants aware of just how much they stand to lose if they are careless and cause damage to the property.

Are candles hurtful to your home?

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

Clip the wick...

Did you know that burning all those candles do more than set the mood and/or scent the air with fragrance?  Burning candles can cause soot throughout a home.  Soot is a powdery black substance composed primarily of small carbon particles, and is the natural byproduct of incomplete combustion.  There have been studies that 100% soy or beeswax candles are somewhat cleaner burning, but a lot of candles are are made with Paraffin Wax and/or blend of different types of waxes.

The soot from burning candles often accumulate and cling to walls, ceilings, furniture, contents and even carpet.  In more extreme cases, candles burning by an HVAC return can have soot distributed throughout the home via its HVAC system.

Soot cleaning a home is very labor intensive and therefore soot damage can be a costly expense.  At SERVPRO, we utilize Specialty Dry Cleaning Sponges to remove soot from walls, ceilings, appliances, furniture and contents.  After cleaning, we recommend the painted surfaces be primed and/or sealed and then painted.  Please note, if a thorough cleaning is not completed prior to painting, staining can appear after a period of time through the paint.  Upholstered furniture and textiles need to be cleaned and sometimes the staining from the soot does not come out.

What can you do to avoid this?  Occasional burning of candles is fine, just remember these factors:  Buy quality well-made candles; Keep the wick trimmed down to ¼ inch, if you see black smoke coming from the candle, it is often a sign that the wick is too long; Candles should really be burned in a well ventilated area, however you do want to keep the burning candle away from drafty areas (the flame should not be flickering or dancing around); Use jar toppers/cappers for large jar candles and for other candles, use a glass vase or hurricane.

If you have questions or concerns about the result of burning candles in your home, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048 today!

Do you know where your shutoff valve is?

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

Main shut off valve outside.

In case of a plumbing emergency, it is always a good idea to educate yourself on how (and where) to turn off your main water supply - as well as the isolation valves on your various plumbing fixtures. A ruptured line, burst pipe, or sewage backup can wreak havoc on your home and potentially cost you thousands in water damage and water bills.

In severe cold weather, the water in your pipes can freeze. When water freezes, it expands and can burst the pipe, not matter how thick or strong it may be. If it's too late and the pipe has already burst, turn off your main water valve as fast as you can to prevent further damages.

Being able to contain the situation as soon as possible will greatly help with damage control and allow a wider window of time for help to arrive (if the situation calls for it). Everyone in your home should know exactly where the water shutoff valve is located and how to turn it off.

Additionally, if you are going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, it is highly recommended that you turn off the main water valve.

Where is the main water shutoff valve located?

This is the million-dollar question. Your main water shutoff valve could be located in several different areas. If you have a home with a basement and crawlspace, it is probably located on an interior wall near the front of the house, where the water comes in from the water meter. In this case, it is most likely hiding in plain sight. If your home was built on a slab, the valve might be located near the hot water heater or inside your garage.

3 Benefits to Carpet Cleaning

11/13/2017 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so you should not forget to clean your carpets with family coming! Something that most people may not know is that cleaning your carpet can clear out dust mite infestation. Many homes contain a dust mite infestation but can not see them because they are microscopic. Carpet cleaning also helps eliminate trapped pollutants such as pet dander, cockroach allergens, lead, and everyday dirt/dust. These gases can be spread throughout a home by vacuuming and casually walking across the carpet. Therefore, it can feel like you are cleaning your carpet at home, but it is very important to have your carpet cleaned every 3-6 months depending on the amount of traffic. Lastly, cleaning your carpet can help prevent MOLD growth. This pertains to areas with high humidity levels such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. We tend to forget to remove our shoes after walking in the rain thinking that the front door mat dried it well enough, but that leftover water can settle into your carpet. This leads to mold growth if it is not vacuumed or dried immediately.

How to Protect Your Home This Winter

10/25/2017 (Permalink)

Winter time for most entails many candles lit, Christmas trees glowing with their pretty lights, and string lights strung along the house. While making your home cozy and comfy for the holidays, these things also come as a hazard to you and your loved ones living there.

According to the NFPA, fire departments responded to 210 house fires within 2010-2014 caused by Christmas trees along with candles being proven to start 38% of house fires in all.

A few ways to take action this season can be to make sure all lights are turned off and unplugged from the wall sockets before everyone goes to bed at night. Also you want to make sure to blow out all candles before bed and anytime no one is at the house.

Fireworks Safety

7/3/2017 (Permalink)

With July 4th just around the corner, it’s important to know how to safely handle and operate fireworks. Every year, there are numerous children sent to the emergency room with firework-related injuries and most, it not all, of those injuries are preventable.

Follow these safety tips to prevent injuries from fireworks:

  • Young children should never be allowed to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Always closely supervise children when fireworks are being used. Young children can be injured even by sparkles when not properly supervised. Sparklers caused more than 40% of ALL injuries due to fireworks.
  • Always place fireworks on the ground and light the fuse at an arms length and immediately get to a safe distance to observe.
  • Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush, leaves and flammable substances.
  • Light fireworks one at a time.
  • Never try to pick and move an already lit firework.
  • Never try to re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Never point or throw a firework at a person’s body or feet.
  • Always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks inside a pocket.
  • Never shoot fireworks into glass or metal containers.
  • After the fireworks have completed burning, douse any fireworks material on the ground with plenty of water before discarding it.

The best way to protect your family is to not use any fireworks at home. Instead, attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals!

State of Georgia Law states: How long can you shoot fireworks?

New Years until 1 am

July 4th until Midnight

Any other day until 9 pm

Should I have my ducts cleaned?

6/22/2017 (Permalink)

Excessive dust vs cleaned system

Knowledge about the potential benefits and possible problems of air duct cleaning is limited. Since conditions in every home are different, it is impossible to generalize about whether or not air duct cleaning in your home would be beneficial.

You should inspect your ducts if your furniture is excessively dusty or if you notice your registers (vents) are dust filled.  After a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary. On the other hand, if someone in your household suffers from allergies, unexplained symptoms or illnesses you may want to consider having your ducts cleaned.  It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.

What to do if water is in your home.

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

IICRC and SERVPRO

One of the worst nightmares for any homeowner is finding water in the basement or anywhere in the home, and in most cases, the only way to deal with such a situation is to bring in a professional. Excess water, especially when it is contaminated, has the potential to cause a great deal of damage, and if the problem is not dealt with properly, the situation can quickly get out of hand. This is especially true when water is pooling in the home and coming in contact with organic materials like drywall or fabric.

Water in the basement can be caused by a lot of factors. The room may sit under the water table, which will slowly push water into the home. A disaster like a flood can quickly fill the room with fluid, as well as a burst pipe or other plumbing mishap. No matter what causes the water to build up in the home, it will take a certified team to remove it and restore the basement effectively.

There are a couple steps, though, that a homeowner can take to minimize damage and make the home safe to navigate through. If a pipe burst or is leaking, then cutting off the supply line into the home can halt the problem. Also, switching off the home’s power may be necessary, as an electrical discharge can make walking through water exceedingly dangerous and cause a fire.

Safety is the primary concern when contending with excess moisture, and a certified crew will be able to get the home restored in while avoiding any dangerous situations.

Grilling Safety Tips

Stay Safe this Summer. Stock photo.

Grill Safety to consider when breaking out your inner backyard culinary skills.

June and July are peak months for summer grilling fires.  The Memorial Day weekend opened up grilling season so if you haven't already, it’s time to dust off the grills and let the inner backyard culinary skills to work.  As exciting as it is to break out the grill for the official start of the summer season right, we have to always consider the safety that needs to be taken when preparing to light up the grill.

NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) says that the U.S. fire department responded to an average of 8,900 home fire that involved the use of grills, hibachis, or barbecues per year.  These 8,900 fires caused annual averages of 10 civilian deaths, 160 injuries, and $118 million in direct property damage. Almost all the losses resulted from structure fires. The leading causes of grill fires were a failure to properly cleaning of the grill, placement of the grill because it was placed to close to a structure, and leaving the grill unattended. Five out of six (83%) of grills involved in home fires were fueled by gas while 13% used other sources of fuel.

Precautions to take while grilling

Propane:

  • Stay alert when grilling. Avoid grilling when you are tired or have consumed too much alcohol.
  • Do Not leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep the grill in a place that is free from flammable items and away from porch rails, and low lying branches.
  • Keep children and pets as far away from the grill as possible
  • Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.

NOTE: A light soap and water solution applied to the hose is a great way to check for leaks. You can often smell a propane leak, but propane will also release bubbles when the soap and water solution is applied. If you detect a leak, turn the gas tank and grill off. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
  • If the flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.
  • Keep your grill clean by regularly removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below.

Charcoal grill safety tips to consider:

  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquid to the flames.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • Electric charcoal starters do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container with a lid.

Dealing with Arson Fire Damage

Our technicians are equipped to clean and restore just about anything in the average home following a fire.

Having to Deal with Arson and Fire Damage

Arson is a serious criminal offense which can result in decades behind bars for those responsible. For the victims of arson, the tragedy is often worse than simply the loss of their home, as arson cases are handled with extreme caution by insurers and may lead to financial ruin as well. For many residents pushed out of their home by arson, getting back in safe and sound is their top priority, which is why we prioritize fast restorations and speedy responses. Here are a few tips for dealing with fire damage as a result of arson should it happen to you.

Don't Try to Clean Up Yourself

Trying to clean and restore your home following fire damage can be dangerous, and while you may make things a little better, it often takes professional care and tools to get the job done right. Our technicians are equipped to clean and restore just about anything in the average home following a fire and do their jobs thoroughly. Additionally, you should refrain from personal effort for insurance purposes, as many insurance providers will take issue with any actions you undertake without their approval.

Be Patient with Insurers

Insurance providers are often slow to pay following an arson, although this is because they must be sure that it was not you who started the fire in the first place. They operate on a principle of innocence until proven guilty, and so if you had nothing to do with the fire, don't worry, the provider will eventually pay for the damages. Be sure to work closely with them, and follow any instructions they give.

Talk to the Police

Our SERVPRO Professionals suggest to work closely with police investigators, as finding the arsonist will be crucial in convincing insurance companies of the fire damage and ensuring justice is served. Above all, you should work with them to ensure your personal safety, as the perpetrator may still have a grudge against you. Additionally, it is a good idea to attend all court dates so as to secure a conviction; otherwise, the arsonist may come back to hurt you again.

How Basement Water Damage is Cleaned Up

7/28/2016 (Permalink)

Whether from a storm, a pipe burst, or a particularly nasty leak, basement flooding is a relatively common affliction to Albany and Americus homes.

Cleaning Up Your Water Damaged Basement

Whether from a storm, a pipe burst, or a particularly nasty leak, basement flooding is a relatively common affliction to homes across the nation. Water naturally seeks to flow to the lowest ground and pool there, and this is often, unfortunately, the nearest home's basement. Basement flooding can range in intensity and damage, from just fractions of an inch of water to full submersion of the area. Regardless, restoring a basement after a flood is a challenging task, and requires professional training and equipment.

Pumping and Extraction
The first step in cleaning up and basement water damage in Albany and Americus is to pump out any remaining water. Depending on how much water is in the basement, extractors can be either portable or mounted on a truck. Simply put, we use these machines to pump water out of a structure to its exterior in massive volumes.

Air Movers and Dehumidifiers
When removing the remaining traces of moisture from a basement, the first step involves heavy air movers, moving large volumes of air rapidly across surfaces to reduce their drying time. Then, we bring in dehumidifiers, which remove moisture from the air which is picked up by air movers. In this way, the two machines work together to dry out a room quickly and remove any extra moisture within.

Deodorization
Waters, especially floodwaters from a storm, can leave terrible smells in a room even after it has dried. Thus, deodorizers in the form of ultra-low volume and thermal foggers are brought out, to mask even the heaviest of smells and make the room livable again.

Sanitization and Cleaning
Once odors and all water have been removed from the basement, professional SERVPRO cleaners move in to sanitize, scrub, and repair each surface in the basement. It is important to let our professionals do this task, as there may still be harmful substances in the environment such as chemical stains and mold growth.

SERVPRO of Albany and Americus is a professional, locally-owned and operated cleanup and restoration company which is trained and equipped to deal with the toughest water damage cases in the area. Contact us for 24/7 emergency service at (229) 439-2048.

Mold Damage to Your Property

6/27/2016 (Permalink)

Found almost anywhere, mold can grow on just about any substance that is organic and create mold damage as long as there is oxygen and moisture.

Mold Damage

Found almost anywhere, mold can grow on just about any substance that is organic and create mold damage as long as oxygen and moisture are also present. Mold can grow on carpet, wood, paper, insulation and foods. With excessive moisture that accumulates in buildings or on materials for building, you’ll often see mold growth as well. It can, however, be controlled inside by taking control of the moisture that is inside.

Because mold needs water to grow and spread, you need to prevent problems of moisture in your structure. Many causes for mold exist, including humidity that is uncontrolled. Some of the moisture problems in structures have been linked to construction practices in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Some changes have caused buildings to be tightly sealed and lacking adequate ventilation, which could lead to the buildup of moisture. Drywall and other building materials might not let moisture escape very easily, either. Moisture problems can include leaking roofs, unvented combustion appliances or gutters which direct water under or into the structure.

Preventing Mold Damage
-Look for wet spots and condensation. Fix any moisture source problems as soon as possible.
-Leaky plumbing needs to be fixed right away.
-Increase surface temperature or lower moisture level in the air to prevent moisture from condensation.
-Keep ventilation, heating, and air conditioning drop pans flowing properly, clean and unobstructed.
-Appliances that generate moisture, like dryers, need to be properly vented to the outside when possible.
-Keep indoor humidity low, below sixty percent relative humidity, and ideally thirty to fifty percent if possible.
-Have regular HVAC and building inspections and maintenance scheduled.
-If you find damp or wet spots, clean and dry them within forty-eight hours.
-Do not let your foundation stay wet. Give proper drainage and slope the ground away from the foundation.

Hidden Mold
Sometimes, mold growth inside a structure might not be visible. It can be growing on surfaces which are hidden, such as the other side of wallpaper, drywall or paneling, on top of ceiling tiles, or underneath pads and carpeting. This is why it is important to call in our professionals at SERVPRO who have the right equipment to be able to find this hidden mold and fix the problem. Some building materials like wood paneling or drywall that has vinyl wallpaper over it can act as vapor barriers, trapping moisture under their surfaces and therefore making an environment that is moist where mold can grow. You might know there is hidden mold if the building has a mold smell. However, you can’t see the source. This is where we can help you. We will find the hidden mold and draw up a plan of remediation that will best suit your needs.

mold damage is not always obvious, but it can be a dangerous situation. That is why you need to contact us at SERVPRO of Albany and Americus by calling any time at (229) 439-2048. We can find the hidden mold, the moisture source, and fix the issue plus clean up the existing mold.

Mold Damage - The Mold Damage In Homes Will Cause Problems For You And Your Family

3/24/2016 (Permalink)

Molds are found in virtually every environment and can be detected, both indoors and outdoors, year round.

Mold Damage Problem In Your Family's Home

Mold is very insidious. It can come in and grow inside things, such as walls, ceilings, crawlspaces and just about anything else. Homes with mold damage in Albany and Americus are unhealthy for anyone who enters them. There is only one thing that can be done when this occurs and it involves bringing professionals in that do this every day.

Mold spores that you do not want in your home exist in nature all around. They are floating in the air inside and out. All they need is a couple of things to live, grow and take over your home if you allow it. All of this can happen within 48 hours, so attention to this detail must get started as quickly as you detect the presence of an earthy, rather musty smell, often coming from a crawl space, closet or under a sink.

When you call an Albany and Americus mold remediation company, they get there on the run. A couple of things have to happen quickly, and they have the experience to know that this is critical. An inspection is the first thing that needs to occur.

This inspection encompasses every space, room, and closet in your house. They are looking and smelling for the growth that is dangerous for your family. The specialized equipment they have can detect any amount of moisture, which is one of the main things mold needs for living. Mold in Albany and Americus is often found behind walls and under floors.

The next step is the containment of the areas that must be cleaned up. Since molds are transported, to a significant degree in the air, this contaminated air must be prevented from moving into other areas, contaminating surfaces that may not have been before.

After containing these regions, the filtering of the air, through large air purifiers and fans begins. This evacuates this air, often made bad by the spores floating around and initiate the process of clean up. The mold is then removed from the surfaces, using specially formulated cleaners and sanitizing agents.

In many cases, since the molds can infiltrate building materials and furniture, these items may have to be removed, whether torn out or simply bagged and moved out of the house. Some of these things may be clothing which can be cleaned and then returned. Other items can be removed, bagged and disposed of at designated disposal sites throughout the area by certified, licensed personnel from the mold removal company.

Then a full top to bottom cleaning process begins. This cleans every surface in the house, including the kitchen, bathrooms, living spaces and especially the carpets. A lot of the carpets may have to have detailed cleaning performed, including sanitizing agents to kill and remove any molds that can be cleaned out. Some carpets need to be pulled up and cleaned from the bottom in advanced cases. Some carpets, of course, need to be removed and disposed of because of the damage that cannot be remedied.

Anything that has been torn out to find and remove mold and the damage it causes is then repaired to return the home to its previous state.

Water Damaged Business Documents Need Restoration

3/10/2016 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus at 229-439-2048 to Save Important Business Documents

SERVPRO Professionally Salvages Water Damaged Docs

Commercial Water Damage is very devastating, especially when there are paper records that have been damaged. Hard copies are sometimes needed along with digital files during the course of doing business. There are steps that you should implement when trying to preserve your damaged documents.

1. Start with the assessment of the present damage by inspecting the area well to aid in the determination of what type of equipment and work will be necessary in order to repair the damage to the structure, documents and records. The inspection must be done thoroughly, but quickly. Focus on determining the type and extent of the water damage, items that have been affected, and what can be salvaged by professional commercial water damage experts. And take photos to substantiate initial water damage. It sounds like it is more prudent to call in SERVPRO of Albany and Americus to restore both the structure and your relevant business documents.

2. Be sure to call your insurance provider to make arrangements for an adjuster to assess the water damage and set up the claim. Ask for a recommendation to restore your business space along with rescuing your documents. SERVPRO comes highly touted as a premier company that has the knowledge, experience, and equipment to mitigate water damage losses. We can also help with the insurance paperwork and the claims process to ensure your fair recovery value.

3. It is wise to freeze records that have been heavily water-logged. This is the most proven method of stabilization. This process should be done at approximately minus 20 degrees F if possible. Rapid freezing will prevent additional damage from immediately occurring and will allow more time for the drying process and the actual restoration later.

4. There has been much proof that the most efficient way to dry water-damaged papers and documents that have been frozen is to put them through the process of pressurized freeze drying. The process is called "Lyophilization." This causes the water molecules to crystallize more rapidly that are in and on the papers and documents. By decreasing the pressure in the  Freeze Drying Chamber the frozen water (crystals) will change from the solid phase of water directly to the gas phase--water vapor. This sublimation process enhances the chances of salvaging valuable documents in bulk.

5. After the documents, records and papers have been freeze dried, they must be handled delicately and cautiously until they have had the necessary time to acclimate to their environment again. It is rather imperative to make sure that they are stored in a space that is well-ventilated and even air conditioned. SERVPRO can restore most water damaged commercial documents to get your business back in order "Like it never even happened."

How To Survive A Commercial Fire

10/29/2015 (Permalink)

As soon as the fire department is through extinguishing the flames, you should contact a fire damage remediation company.

How To Survive A Commercial Fire

Although running a business can be personally rewarding and professionally advantageous, corporate leaders often find themselves grappling with challenging situations such as commercial fire damage. If your commercial property is subjected to fire, you can experience emotional upset, structural damage, health hazards, and challenges ensuring the safety of your employees. However, learning how to implement proven tips and tricks that help you grapple with the aftermath of a fire can limit and even eliminate these frustrations. With that idea in mind, consider implementing the following four strategies when you find yourself dealing with a property fire:

1. Call A Fire Damage Remediation Company.
As soon as the fire department is through extinguishing the flames, you should contact a fire damage remediation company. In many cases, property owners who undergo a fire are tempted to complete the cleanup and repair process for themselves. Don't do this.  commercial fire damage remediation specialists possess the extensive education, experience, and equipment necessary to complete the restoration process quickly and correctly. If you attempt to do this work yourself, you can expose yourself to health hazards and compromise the safety of your employees.

2. Get Your Records Together.
In addition to calling a commercial fire damage remediation company, it's crucial that you get your records together. This means that you will need to create an inventory list and take pictures of damaged items. This information should be presented to your insurance agent to ensure that you attain as much coverage as possible for repair costs. Also, note that it's a good idea to purchase a fireproof safe where you can store records. It's also prudent to regularly backup your computer records and then store them on a hard drive in the safe.

3. Call Your Insurance Company.
Calling your insurance company is a must following a commercial fire. As mentioned earlier, you'll need to present them with records and documentation indicating the depth and scope of damages. In addition to determining how much coverage you will attain, the insurance company may be able to refer you to a highly qualified fire damage remediation company.

4. Attain Approval To Reenter The Property.
Don't assume that it is safe to reenter your property after a fire. In some cases, there may be sanitation issues, health hazards, or structural weaknesses that make reentry unsafe. For this reason, it's important that you attain permission to reenter from the fire department or another authoritative figure.

How SERVPRO Can Restore Your Fire Damaged Home in Albany and Americus

Once your residential property has been impacted by a fire, it's critically important that you start the fire damage remediation process. Fire restoration experts know that a house fire can alter the stability of the structure and safety of your family. Moreover, the complex processes necessary to restore your home make it important and advantageous for you to hire a professional team to complete this work for you. Learn more about fire damage restoration and how industry specialists from SERVPRO can assist you.

Fire Damage Restoration: Basic Techniques

In general, there are four basic ways that a professional remediation company will restore homes damaged by fire. These four ways include:

• drying your home
• removing debris
• cleaning your HVAC system
• rebuilding your home's structure

Learn more about each step in the process by reviewing the following data:

Drying Your Home

After a fire has impacted your property, water damage is the primary issue to address and resolve. Firefighters, for a large house fire, will spray vast volumes of water to extinguish the flames. Unfortunately, damp furniture, drywall, carpeting, and fabrics can all function as a breeding ground for unwanted mold and mildew. Professional fire damage remediation specialists from SERVPRO utilize water pumps, vacuums, dehumidifiers and other machines to make sure that your home becomes as dry as possible. This step is quite important given that the greatest financial burden following a fire results from secondary water damage.

Removing Debris

If you discover personal possessions and other items have been extensively damaged by the fire, these things must be discarded. If they are not, the items can contaminate other regions of the property. SERVPRO, upon request, will provide you an inventory report of salvageable and items that need trashing.  They also can offer you a "pack away" of personal items to be returned to your home upon completion of the fire damage restoration.

Cleaning Your HVAC System

Individuals who have HVAC systems in their homes should note that fires can clog the coils and filters with soot, ashes, and other debris. When this happens, the company handles replacing the damaged equipment. The kinds of repairs that will be necessary are contingent upon how damaged your property is and what kind of smoke the fire has generated. Soot requires skilled expertise along with the proper equipment to remove from the ductwork and air-handler.

Structural Rebuild

In the event that a fire has damaged sections of the structure of your property, they must be replaced. SERVPRO can either execute the repairs or set up an outside construction company. Bear in mind, it is usually less expensive and takes up less time to repair and restore damages to the home rather than to replace fire-damaged materials.

Let The Professionals Of SERVPRO Assist You

When your home has been impacted by fire damage, call SERVPRO of Albany and Americus for assistance. The quicker the call, the quicker we can get you back into your home.

Montezuma Mold - Friend or Foe?

7/21/2015 (Permalink)

There are thousands of species of molds, and they are everywhere.

Mold - Friend or Foe?

There are thousands of species of molds, and they are everywhere. Generally when we think of mold, we think of it as something bad - and sometimes it is - but there are useful Montezuma molds also.

Mold as Your Friend
There are also other benefits from some mold. Any medicine name that ends with "mycin" is made with mold. Without mold, we would not have beer, bread or mushroom pizza.

    •        Molds help to make cheese
    •        It speeds the decay of leaves and garbage, putting these back into the soil.
    •        It is helpful in producing antibiotics and hormones
    •        Red mold is being used in genetic experiments.

Montezuma mold does have a good place in or lives, but we don't want it growing in our homes.

Mold as Your Foe
As mentioned above, there are thousands of species of mold. Below are just a few of the more common molds:

    •        Penicillium /Aspergillus – allergenic; only a few are toxic.
    •        Cladosporium – allergenic.
    •        Curvularia – allergenic mold
    •        Chaetomium – can cause infections in individuals with weak immune systems.
    •        Stachybotrys – Toxic, but not all sub-species are toxic.
    •        Memnoniella – often grows with Stachybotrys and considered toxic.

Safe Mold Levels
An arid location will have a lower mold count than a hot, humid area. In northern climates, mold goes dormant at 39 degrees and beings growing again when the weather warms up. Now, take a hot, humid environment, such as Florida, and you have some happy, reproducing mold and evidence of mold damage! Because of these differences in the locality, a reading of the outdoor air count is considered acceptable for the indoor air.

The following mold spore ranges use the spore/m3 number and not the raw count for each species when interpreted in a lab’s “Air Sample Report”.

    •        0-200 spores – the toxic mold species Stachybotrys and Memnoniella are the only species to be considered an issue at this level.
    •        200-1500 spores – Penicillium/Aspergillus & Cladosporium levels are in this range and do not require remediation.
    •        1500-3000 spores – this point indicates that an issue may be apparent. These levels can be achieved by a dusty home or A/C system.
    •        3000-10,000 spores – A perimeter cleanup may be needed if a mold spore source has been identified. If water intrusion or mold issue wasn’t found, the home might need to be cleaned, and the duct system should be evaluated.
    •        10,000-25,000 spores – a mold spore source is usually identified, and remediation is needed. If no water intrusion or mold issue was found, the duct system might need to be cleaned and a general cleaning of the residence.

Camilla Water Damage Clean Up — Why is Fast Response So Important?

7/21/2015 (Permalink)

Water damage is not to be treated lightly.

The Key to Successfully Restore Water Damaged Areas

Camilla water damage is not to be treated lightly. Experts recommend that professional treatment should begin within the first 48 hours after the damage has been discovered. This is critical to minimize the growth of toxic molds and bacteria that can damage the integrity of the structure and also put at risk the health of its’ occupants. Studies have found that molds and bacteria will start to grow on untreated wet drywall in less than 48 hours. In addition to inhibiting toxic microbial growth, the treatment also limits permanent damage to the structure itself.

It is essential to secure a contractor who specializes in Camilla water damage, such as SERVPRO, to begin the cleanup process as early as possible. Allowing the trained service professionals to assess the extent of the damage and begin treatment early will reduce the amount of permanent damage sustained to the structure and personal effects. Remediation begins by removing the water as soon as possible. Extraction pumps will be used to remove visible water. The removal of wet materials, such as carpets, drywall and insulation, will also be part of the necessary actions performed by the trained professionals. Drying out the affected area is critical to minimize the growth of bacteria and mold. Commercial dryers and high efficiency dehumidifiers will be used to complete the water removal process.

Ensuring that the level of moisture is at an acceptable level, the restoration team will monitor the area with a hygrometer. This is especially important for small closed in spaces, behind cabinetry or in recessed areas of the structure. Beginning the reconstruction before the moisture level has been reduced to normal levels increases the probability that mold and mildew will become an issue in the future.

How successful the complete restoration of the structure greatly depends on how soon the trained professionals, like SERVPRO, are able to start the process. SERVPRO offer 24-hour availability, and they have personnel ready to begin the water removal process immediately. Water damage is disheartening, but letting a trained team of professionals handle the cleanup and restoration of the structure provides peace of mind.

11 Tips for What to do During and After a Americus Business Fire

7/21/2015 (Permalink)

If you see any smoke, do not open the door.

11 Tips for What to do During and After a Business Fire

Americus commercial fire damage can have a devastating impact on the daily activities of your business. In order to survive Americus commercial fire damage, your company needs to have a plan of action. At SERVPRO, we know how disorienting and frightening a fire can be. We have compiled a list of things you can do in the event of a business fire.

1. Check your doors. Before opening any door, you should check the opening of the door to see if there is the presence of smoke. The saying 'where there is smoke there is fire' is an accurate statement. If you see any smoke, do not open the door. You can also touch the door to gauge its temperature. Exit through windows if the doors are unavailable.

2. Get out of the building - FAST. It is important not to waste time gathering personal items. Find the nearest route to get you and your staff to safety. When you are safely outside of the building, move as far away from it as possible.

3. Be aware of the dangers of smoke inhalation. As you exit the building, stay as far away from smoke as possible. Instead of walking, crawl on the floor until you are safely out of the building. Inhaling smoke can cause you to feel weak and lead to death. Stay clear of any smoke.

4. Take a head count. When your staff has moved to a safe place, count the number of people that have made it out of the building safely. If you find that a person is missing, do not go back into the building to find them. Allow the first responders to conduct the search. Only return to the building when it is safe to do so.

5. Contact the American Red Cross.

6. Call your insurance company. They can help you fix the commercial damage.

7. Do not re-enter the building without permission from the fire department under any circumstances.

8. Gather your records and important documents to present to the insurance company.

9. Keep track of any expenses related to the commercial damage.

10. Contact the police. If your property is abandoned and open to the public, request police to monitor the building during your absence.

11. Contact SERVPRO for disaster restoration services.

Albany and Americus Homeowner's Guide to Preventing Storm Damage

7/21/2015 (Permalink)

Hail, high winds and flooding are possible during a severe thunderstorm.

Homeowner's Guide to Preventing Storm Damage

For much of the country, summer means storms. Thunderstorms are a welcome relief from the heat of summer, but the same storms that bring relief from the heat can also lead to a damaged home. Homeowners can minimize the risk of Albany and Americus storm damage by preparing for the season and repairing the damage quickly.

Preventing Flood Damage
Hail, high winds and flooding are possible during a severe thunderstorm. To prepare for the storms ahead, consider hiring a professional to determine the elevation of the home and whether the home lies in a flood-prone area. Even homes that are typically not affected by flooding may be at-risk when rainfall amounts are higher than average for the region.

Homeowners should also be aware of how water travels on the property. For instance, homeowners should note whether rainwater drains away from or toward the home. A professional landscaping company can assist you in diverting water away from your home to minimize the risk of flooding.

Annual Maintenance for Homeowners
Clean gutters are essential when preventing Albany and Americus storm damage. Clean the gutters regularly during storm season, and check downspouts to ensure the water is draining away from the home. It is also important to examine windows to prevent Albany and Americus storm damage. Examine window wells after a minor rain, and make repairs if the window well isn't draining properly. To further weatherproof windows, apply fresh caulk around windows as needed to prevent leaks.

The roof is your first and most important line of defense against water damage. To ensure your roof is ready for severe storms, hire a professional roofing company to examine the home for signs of damage, and make any necessary repairs immediately.

Preparing Your Basement for Heavy Rains
Basements are particularly prone to flooding, but can be protected with regular maintenance. To prevent water damage, check the sump pump after storms to ensure it is working properly, and use a non-GFI power source to power the pump. If valuable items are stored in the basement, place the items in a secure location off the basement floor.

To further prevent damage, check the basement immediately after severe storms and whenever heavy rains occur. Even a small amount of standing water can cause serious damage to the home and your belongings.

If you are planning a summer vacation, leave a house key with a trusted neighbor who can inspect the basement for storm damage while you are away. SERVPRO can assist you with any preparations or repairs that you need to make your home weather-resistant for the summer season.

Local disaster recovery specialist offers insight into the complexities of dealing with disaster

Albany and Americus, GA October 9, 2014 - When disaster strikes, property owners need to make a lot of decisions quickly and under pressure. Effective disaster remediation involves a lot of moving parts:  remediation specialists, insurance companies, local codes, state codes, documentation and more—and all of this has to happen in an atmosphere charged with emotion and stress.

Benjamin Kyle Carter of SERVPRO® of Albany and Americus says, “Efficiency is key when you are dealing with disaster remediation; it saves our customers money and it makes our work more effective. SERVPRO is an industry leader in work efficiency technology—continually innovating to help both our customers and our business control costs.”

SERVPRO’s proprietary DryBook™ tool is one example of the company’s focus on efficiency and cost control. Remediation projects must be managed to both industry and insurance company standards, and Carter says that tools like DryBook™  help SERVPRO Franchise technicians track and document progress on restoration, cleanup and repair services.  “The DryBook™ tool helps us deliver on every detail of every water damage job, every time,” says Carter.

To help avoid regulatory headaches and paperwork pitfalls, Carter suggests property owners consider the following criteria when choosing a remediation company to deal with the aftermath of a disaster.

1.      Industry standards: Does your remediation company deliver a product that meets the standards set by

  • The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)?
  • Most major insurance companies, including cycle times and deadline requirements?

2.      Recordkeeping: Does your remediation company have a system in place to ensure accurate, complete and convenient benchmarking of each step of the remediation process, including

  • Capturing and updating data, including job diary notes, electronically and real-time on the jobsite, with simultaneous updates saved at the central office?
  • Using e-signatures to help eliminate lost paperwork and the need to scan documents?
  • Providing a complete record of the damage and remediation efforts in images, with descriptions, start-to-finish?

3.      Equipment selection: Does your contractor have the ability, on-the-spot, to

  • Identify the right equipment for the job, based on the damage description?
  • Validate the use of each piece of equipment, automatically, as part of the remediation records?

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers.
